Sante Fe Mountain is an out-and-back trail near Idaho Springs off Soda Creek Road. Take a left turn immediately after going under I-70 onto Montane Drive. The trail starts in a residential neighborhood with paved and graded gravel streets before reaching the Forest Service boundary. After entering the National Forest, the road gets narrower and gradually rougher as it winds its way up the side of the mountain through magnificent pine and fir forest with occasional lovely aspen groves. There are several areas where the forest opens up, providing stunning views of the surrounding mountains. Eventually, the trail ends at a private gate. Dispersed camping is abundant with many nice sites of various sizes. Sante Fe Mountains’ proximity to Barbour Fork make it a nice alternative for camping or a fun way to extend the day.
