While the traditional North Fork Swan River trail turns across the river at some cabin ruins and follows Geribaldi Gulch above the tree line, this extension trail begins at that same cabin and follows the river up the valley to the ruins of an unknown mine. The trail is rocky and rough but not difficult, and there are no significant obstacles. The views up this valley are spectacular, and the few established campsites are excellent. The trail officially ends on a switchback with just enough room for a couple of trucks to turn around. Just before the end, a spur with a campsite gives larger groups a way to get pointed back downhill.
