Hovenweep is a collection of stone masonry great houses built between 1200 and 600 years ago. A dirt road accesses the Hackberry and Holly areas. A spur leads out to a short hike to Hackberry Spring. Short hikes are required to reach the ruins.
The Hackberry cluster of ruins is a short hike from the first marked trailhead. The Holly ruins are at the end of the trail. Accessing the Holly trailhead parking lot requires decent clearance over several rock ledges. Lower clearance vehicles can park a short distance away.
There are two campsites along the trail. Both are relatively small and not very level.
The quality of the masonry and architecture of the surviving ruins is impressive. Enjoy, but never touch these historical relics.
