The South Colony Trail begins just south of Westcliffe and provides access to the South Colony Basin Hiking Trailhead. The road surface is mostly hard-packed dirt with a few rocks. Stock 4x4 high-clearance vehicles with a low range can navigate the road without issue. There are also several dispersed campsites located along the route. The trail ends at a large parking lot, which serves as a staging area for hiking access to South Colony Lakes, the Crestone Needle (14,203'), and Humbolt Peak (14,072').
