Kaiparowits is a Paiute name that translates to Big Mountains Little Brother. The Kaiparowits Plateau was one of the last mapped areas of the United States, and still one of the least traveled. Smoky Mountain Road crosses the plateau from Lake Powell to Escalante. The road gets its name from the smoky coal seam fires along the plateau's southern edge. But first, you will have to climb the steep switchbacking Kelly Grade with its amazing views of Lake Powell. Be sure to stop at the top of the grade to admire the views. The coal seam fires are only 2.4 miles north of the top of the Kelly Grade. Sandstone arches and even a few ancient petroglyphs litter the northern portion of the trail.
Smoky Mountain Road is easy to drive in good conditions. However, this road is extremely remote and very seldom driven. Bring plenty of water, and let someone responsible know where you are going.
