Thompsons Hole

Thompsons Hole travels to a natural alcove canyon along the San Rafael River. Unique petroglyphs mark the spot's significance for how to cross the San Rafael Swell via the river. There are a few moderate challenges that most stock 4x4s with high clearance and durable tires can safely navigate. Rocky descents and climbs are on the early portion, but the most challenging part is the descent down into the canyon. The blind sharp turn at the top is the worst part; the narrow ledge can be intimidating and scary. It's not very steep, and the traction is fairly good. Move a rock out of the way instead of driving around. It might just save your life. The camping area is small and would be best in a rooftop tent. Taking the southern spur at the end leads to the best site and petroglyphs on the panel above the river.
