Dude Ranch Road loops west off Highway 191, climbing into the Manti-La Sal National Forest. On its southern end, the road is initially marked as San Juan 264. the first stretch of crumbling asphalt has views of Recapture Reservoir. The trail climbs steadily through a mix of private property and BLM land. Watch out for cows on the road.
At the National Forest border, the road becomes FR 84. The trail passes through a forest of large pines with good views of the Abajo Mountains. There are several dispersed campsites scattered along the trail. A very large camping area with a vault toilet sits at the intersection with Bulldog - Blue Mountain, FR 85. Shortly after the intersection, there's a sign marking Harry Hopkin's grave and detailing his mysterious death. The forest road passes a commercial retreat and is paved the rest of the way to Highway 191.
