Take a classic, high-elevation trip to an old 1914 Fire Lookout Tower. Bear Valley Lookout offers incredible 360-degree views of the Salmon River area. At the top of the trail is an awesome lookout tower that is no longer in use. Imagine being stationed up there.
The trail climbs to 8300 feet, so snow and fallen trees are always an issue early in the summer. There can be times you are climbing four-foot snow drifts on the 4th of July. Even though the trail can be rocky and gains close to 2000 feet of elevation in four miles, the trail is actually quite pleasant, with only a few spots of rocks exposed to drive around for stock four-wheel-drive vehicles.
The trail switchbacks and winds through an area of burned timber, open views, and heavy timber, giving a great variety of sights. Deer, elk, moose, and other animals are visible from the trail.
