This trail leads to one of the most unique features of the Ocotillo Wells area. Gas domes are where water and natural gas bubble out of the ground in murky mud. This is interesting because they are far from anything, including a water source.
Legends say if you put mud on your face, you will receive the blessing of the desert.
If you are looking to camp in this area, check out the hills just to the west of the gas domes. The park has odd rules about camping in the area. So if you want to camp near the east side of the trail, please get in touch with the park first.
